Sprain

A sprained ankle occurs when ligaments in your ankle joint stretch or tear. The result may be pain, swelling, and bruising. A sprain can be mild to severe, and your physician can guide you in proper treatment.

Fracture

A broken bone may result from a strong blow or twist. The result is pain, swelling, and bruising. It is often difficult to tell the difference between a bad sprain and a fracture without x-rays.

Tendon Problems

Overusing your Achilles tendon (the tendon in the back of your heel) can lead to swelling and pain, and even rupture in some cases.
