Dr. Sonnenberg is a board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in the care of upper extremity disorders. He treats conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder and all upper extremity problems including fractures, arthritis, work-related injuries, and peripheral nerve dysfunction (such as carpal tunnel syndrome), regardless of whether traumatic or chronic. His patient base spans from pediatric to adolescent, and from adult to geriatric.
While most problems have a conservative solution, Dr. Sonnenberg also performs surgery when necessary on the entire range of upper extremity disorders involving bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. He is adept at shoulder arthroscopy (including rotator cuff repair, ligament and cartilage repair), along with elbow and wrist arthroscopy. His expertise extends to total joint replacement of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist.
Dr. Sonnenberg attended medical school in Chicago at the University of Illinois as an Edmund James Independent Scholar. He completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh mentoring under the legendry Dr. Albert B. Ferguson. He received specialty hand surgery training in the University of California system.
Since joining Dr. Gerald F. Loftus in practice in 1981, Dr. Sonnenberg has now become the senior partner at Midland Orthopedic Associates. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Sonnenberg served tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq with the US Army and is retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In his spare time Dr. Sonnenberg enjoys ice hockey, opera and theater, and spending time with wife Theresa, nine children, and eleven (and counting) grandchildren.
